Handling Emergencies on the Road

Hi Reader

Emergencies on the road; they’re the moments we hope never happen… but the truth is, they’re part of being a licensed driver and that’s exactly why preparing your teen before something goes wrong is one of the most powerful lessons you can give them.

This week is all about helping you feel calm and equipped to walk your teen through those “what if” scenarios, so they’re not left panicking or worse, freezing when something unexpected happens.

🛑 Parent Tip: Teach Calm Before the Chaos

One of the biggest mistakes we make is only talking about emergencies after they’ve happened. This week, set aside a bit of time (maybe even in the car before a drive!) to ask your teen:

  • “What would you do if a tyre blew out right now?”
  • “What’s the first thing you’d do if you accidentally hit a parked car?”
  • “How would you respond if an aggressive driver was tailgating you?”
  • “What would you do if you were in a more serious accident?”
(e.g., checking for injuries, calling emergency services, staying safe at the scene)

Talking these things through now helps your teen feel more in control later.
They’re not just learning to drive the car, they’re learning how to stay safe in the real world.

How to Teach your Teen to Park

Hi Reader Some of the greatest moments I’ve ever had with my boys weren’t planned. They weren’t fancy family trips or milestone celebrations… They were in the car. Just us, travelling somewhere, side by side. That’s where the real chats happened. That’s where I heard their biggest fears, their funniest stories, and their quietest dreams. And interestingly, research shows I’m not alone. Studies tell us that boys often feel more comfortable sharing during side-by-side conversations, rather than...
