Why How You Teach Shapes How They Drive

Hi there Confident Driving Coach Reader

How are your drives going lately?

I hope you've been able to hit the road and soak up some valuable lesson time, especially if you're fortunate enough to be enjoying this glorious Queensland sunshine! There’s something about a blue-sky day that makes even the trickiest roundabout feel a little more manageable, right? Whether you’re steadily building up those logbook hours or just easing into your first few drives, I’m so proud of the intention you're bringing to this journey. You're not just teaching your teen to drive, you’re coaching them toward calm, capable, and confident independence.

🔑 Parent Tip of the Week

“The Right Approach” It’s Not Just What You Teach… It’s How

It’s easy to focus on the road rules and forget that how you communicate those rules matters just as much, if not more. Here’s how to strengthen your coaching approach:

🧭 Coach-Mode > Critic-Mode
Swap reactive corrections for supportive guidance.
Try: “Let’s try easing off the brake a little earlier,” instead of “You braked too late again!”

🧘 Pause – Breathe – Speak
Your calm is contagious. A 3-second pause before giving feedback can reset the tone for the whole drive.

🤝 Side-by-Side Reflection
Ask open questions like:

“What did you notice about that turn?”
It builds their self-awareness and positions you as a thinking partner, not a judge.

🎉 Tiny Wins = Big Confidence
Acknowledge progress every single drive. Even if it’s just “You held that lane so well today” it sticks.

🧠 RoadMAP Reminder:
You’re in Step 2: O – Overcome Obstacles (especially emotional ones). When your learner sees that mistakes don’t rattle you, they learn that it’s okay to keep learning too.

How to Teach your Teen to Park

Hi Reader Some of the greatest moments I’ve ever had with my boys weren’t planned. They weren’t fancy family trips or milestone celebrations… They were in the car. Just us, travelling somewhere, side by side. That’s where the real chats happened. That’s where I heard their biggest fears, their funniest stories, and their quietest dreams. And interestingly, research shows I’m not alone. Studies tell us that boys often feel more comfortable sharing during side-by-side conversations, rather than...
